Kinja'd!!!

My buddy just picked one up, and is letting me drive/review it this weekend. Proper three pedal layout with DCC and nav. What do you want to know about it? VWs are not my area of expertise - is there anything in particular I should look for?

Sunroof or na?

Sunroof isn’t even an option in the R, believe it or not.

I’d like to know how big the back seats are (assuming a 4 door) and the storage in the hatch. I’ve got a kid under 1 and have been looking at the R. Just curious if a car seat and all the crap kids come with will fill up the usable space.

After the review, can you try out the S3 and tell us if it’s worth the premium?

I’ll go ahead and tell you that rear-facing seats will cramp you. Forward facing, you’ll be okay...until they’re old enough to kick the seats.

Good question. I’ll be sure to do the “sit behind myself” test and maybe crawl into the hatch. :)

I’m a huge fan of stealth, and I love that the R looks just like a bargain basement Golf to the untrained eye. But that’s my opinion. Other hot hatches definitely look much more sporty than this.

Invest a few bucks in those fabric seatback protectors (check Amazon, Walmart, etc) — they’re pretty good. And if it makes you feel any better, very, very few cars have real leather on the seatbacks until you hit $100k+. But I would honestly not want my kids (5 and 2) to continue growing up inside any car I really cared about, or planned to keep a very long time.

Understood. We’ll probably have another in the next few years so the R would get even smaller then.

Yeah, it’s a nice idea, but I owned a MkIII Golf, my brother had a MkIV GTI and now a MkVI Golf, plus my dad has a MkIV R32. We’ve had more Golfs than any other car in our extended family...and I could never, ever imagine a decent quality of life (sanity) with multiple kids. We outgrew our Passat wagon with baby #2 and went with the minivan. I wanted to stick with a wagon, but all the Volvo and Mercedes models I wanted were just too nice for kids to destroy...maybe one day :D

Curious if it has effortless torque down low, or more of a high strung wind it out kind of motor. Also, everyone raves about the DSG, at least as much as one can rave about a VW, but how good or not good is manuel?

It just gets to be such a pain in the ass to pull him in and out of my A4 and my wife’s Corolla. She’s due for an upgrade before me though. She wants a CX5 and she’s the primary transporter of the kiddo so I keep trying to justify something fun since I don’t move him around too much.

She told me “you will like the shifter, shorter than the audi and very crisp.” Previous car was a 2001 S4 Avant. Good shifter but it have a very long throw. I’m used to my BRZ, so I admit I’m spoiled.

I had a B5 Passat (5MT, Eibach, etc) for my “fun car” that was carried over from before kids — it was getting a little too spotty to hang onto. I usually kept a couple safe, but crappy, car seats for the occasional toting duties. If you want the easiest possible life for your wife, go with increased ride height — CX5 would be good, CX-7/9 probably better if you’re planning for the future. I hate to advise people to buy more car than they need, but it’s an investment in peace of mind. You can just take all your crap with you, no need to be selective or plan too hard.

Yeah the reliability of my B6 is an issue. It’s been good for the last year but I just always know something is coming. Mrs. Spaceball isn’t very tall so anything larger than a CX5 she gets nervous. Hell she hated driving my 4runner and it’s not much bigger. We’re still shopping for her.

What are the seats like? Are they real tight with the chest bolsters? This is on the short list of cars I’d like to get in several years time.

If you want to speculate, at what price is this car the correct buy? I’ve already heard that it’s the GTI for GTI fanboys, and that for most people the GTI is the better purchase.

The back seats in golfs/gti/R’s are surprisingly roomy.... I’ve done roadtrips with 6'3" guys in the back of mine and they didn’t have any problems....
